This piece was inspired by the mantra of planning the work and working the plan—because, let’s be honest, sometimes the plan works you instead.

It all started with a simple goal: buy a pair of adult skate shoes in my size. Any pair would do. But fate (and retail inventory) had other plans. What’s that? The only shoes you have in my size are Nike Dunks? Ugh, fine… Oh, wait—these are actually great.

What began as a begrudging purchase became a full-blown love affair, an obsession that supports my skateboarding—a healthy, active meditation—which, in turn, fuels all my greater goals in life. We plan the work, we work the plan. But always with a sense of humor, because life is too serious, and laughter is lovely.
