I chose to create this piece for the Halloween Show due to the innate creepiness of cicadas’ exoskeletons, as well as the irony of this year being the emergence of “Brood XIII” of the broods of periodical cicadas. Every 17 years, Brood XIII tunnels en masse to the surface of the ground, mates, lays eggs in tree twigs, and then dies off over several weeks. And, I chose this piece with the unsettling fact in mind that it is the number 13 brood in October...
