I chose to create this piece for the Halloween Show due to the creepy, alien-like look of a periodical cicada. This year is the emergence of “Brood XIII” of the broods of periodical cicadas. Every 17 years, Brood XIII tunnels en masse to the surface of the ground, mates, lays eggs in tree twigs, and then dies off over several weeks. It is beyond frightening when you imagine if one of these cicadas was the size of the one in this piece...
