“The Carrying Place 166”

Fine Art Photo by Victoria Walz, Barnfellows Art Images, 24 x 36 | $359

It’s estimated this waterfall pours 3,200 powerful gallons of water every second into the rocky gorge 120 feet below. No wonder a footpath was developed, so traders coming from the Great Lakes by way of the Pigeon River could avoid the last 22 miles where impassible waterfall ledges and rapids were. The Ojibwe called the path Kitchi Onigaming. French explorers translated the name to mean the Great Carrying Place, or Grand Portage. As a nod to classic park photographers of the past, I chose to print this High Falls image as a traditional black and white. A monochromatic grayscale works wonderfully with the jagged rocks lining the steep fall into the plunge pool of Minnesota’s tallest waterfall on Lake Superior’s North Shore.
